Nov. 7, 2016 (Moncton, NB) – HealthCareCAN and the Canadian Patient Safety Institute presented today the 2016 Patient Safety Champion Awards to the Michael Garron Hospital (East York, Ontario) in the team category and to Ms. Johanna Trimble from the Community Engagement Advisory Network (Vancouver, BC) in the volunteer category. The awards recognize the exemplary leadership and collaboration to champion change and achieved safer care through patient/family engagement.
“We are very proud to promote patient safety in our organizations and to highlight the exceptional work of individuals and teams who exemplify best practices and the steadfast commitment to better patient care,” said Bill Tholl, president and CEO of HealthCareCAN.
The Team/Organizational Champion Award recognizes a team or organization who, through exemplary patient centred care and patient engagement practices, contributed to a project or initiative that resulted in an identifiable positive impact on patient safety outcomes. The Volunteer Champion Award recognizes a patient/ family volunteer who, through exemplary dedication and service, contributed to a project or initiative that resulted in an identifiable improvement in patient safety outcomes.
Along with this year’s winners, honorary mentions were given in the volunteer category to Alifa Khan and Adrienne Zarem from the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital (Toronto, Ontario) and to Charles Pharand from Bruyère Continuing Care (Saint-Vincent Hospital) Volunteer Resources (Ottawa, Ontario). Montreal Children’s Hospital (Montreal, Quebec) and Toronto Rehab’s Lyndhurst Spinal Cord Rehabilitation Team (Toronto, Ontario) received honorary mentions in the team/organizational category.
The awards were presented during the Patient Experience Conference in Moncton, New Brunswick organized by Horizon Health Network.
The 2016 Patient Safety Champion Awards are presented by HealthCareCAN and Canadian Patient Safety Institute with support from Patients for Patient Safety Canada.
