Dec. 12, 2016 (Ottawa) – HealthCareCAN is pleased with today’s announcement by the Minister of Health, Jane Philpott and the Minister of Public Safety, Ralph Goodale, that aims to streamline the process for the creation of new safe-injection sites.
“Hospitals across Canada are dealing every day with the enormous consequences of opioid overdoses. Evidence has shown how safe-injection sites can help prevent death and deal with addiction issues. Several communities across Canada are ready to move along with the establishment of these harm prevention programs and we need those to be in place fast,” said Bill Tholl, President and CEO of HealthCareCAN.
HealthCareCAN also welcomes the introduction of Bill C-37 which would put drug policy back into the hands of the Department of Health and as Minister Philpott announced “reframe problematic substance use as the public health issue that it is.”
HealthCareCAN is the national voice of healthcare organizations and hospitals across Canada. We foster informed and continuous, results-oriented discovery and innovation across the continuum of healthcare. We act with others to enhance the health of the people of Canada; to build the capability for high quality care; and to help ensure value for money in publicly financed, healthcare programs.
