Dec. 13, 2017 (Ottawa) – HealthCareCAN is pleased that the Standing Committee on Finance (FINA) acknowledged the crucial role that research hospitals and health research play in Canada’s future. Among the numerous health related recommendations contained in the 2018 pre-budget report Driving Inclusive Growth: Spurring Productivity and Competitiveness in Canada the committee made direct reference to HealthCareCAN’s own recommendations from its pre-budget submission on health infrastructure and funding for health research. These are:
Recommendation : Support research hospitals by providing direct eligibility for infrastructure and innovation support and by increasing funding, over a four-year period, for investigator-led fundamental research.
Recommendation : Using the Fundamental Science Review (the Naylor Report) as a framework for long-term support of science and research. In particular, the government should invest in investigator-led research, the Canadian Foundation for Innovation, applied science research institutions, as well as in agricultural research. The government should also expand access to the Canadian Graduate Scholarship program.
“We commend the Committee for having listened to the concerns of healthcare organizations across the country. We all agree that without further investment, health research will be severely compromised. Direct access to government infrastructure funds provide numerous benefits, including addressing deferred maintenance and improving the way health care is delivered. We sincerely hope that the Minister of Finance will reflect these recommendations in the 2018 budget”, said Paul-Émile Cloutier, President and CEO of HealthCareCAN.
In addition, the Committee has made several other recommendations that will benefit the work and areas of interest of our members. Canada’s healthcare institutions play a critical role in ensuring that Canada remains a productive player in a competitive world. In addition to their role in the delivery of healthcare, healthcare organizations and hospitals also educate and train healthcare professionals and researchers.
HealthCareCAN is the national voice of healthcare organizations and hospitals across Canada. We foster informed and continuous, results-oriented discovery and innovation across the continuum of healthcare. We act with others to enhance the health of the people of Canada; to build the capability for high quality care; and to help ensure value for money in publicly financed, healthcare programs.
