HealthCareCAN applauds federal infrastructure investment for McGill University Health Centre

March 3, 2017 (Ottawa) – HealthCareCAN applauds the partnership announced yesterday that saw important investments being made to the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC)’s Montreal General Hospital.  The partnership involved MUHC, McGill University, the federal government’s Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund, the Québec provincial government and the Montreal General Hospital Foundation.

“This announcement represents an important breakthrough for research hospitals in terms of being deemed eligible to apply‎ for federal infrastructure funding.  It’s a healthier and smarter way to invest in our economic future,” said Bill Tholl, President and CEO of HealthCareCAN.  “It also paves the way towards a more inclusive health research and innovation ecosystem.”  A similar announcement was made at the University of New Brunswick to include health networks Vitalité and Horizon in the fall of 2016.

HealthCareCAN applauds the new, more inclusive approach by our federal government, research hospitals, universities and by the provinces.  This augurs well for leveraging up the Canadian health research advantage. The Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund of $8.5 million announced yesterday will be dedicated to the renovation of the Montreal General Hospital’s Centre for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE), Centre for Innovative Medicine (CIM) and the Surgical Innovation Platform.  Part of the $8.5 million also involves contributions from the Quebec government and the Montreal General Hospital Foundation.

HealthCareCAN is the national voice of healthcare organizations and hospitals across Canada.  We foster informed and continuous, results-oriented discovery and innovation across the continuum of healthcare.  We act with others to enhance the health of the people of Canada; to build the capability for high quality care; and to help ensure value for money in publicly financed, healthcare programs.
