HealthCareCAN mourns 215 innocent lives lost

HealthCareCAN mourns 215 innocent lives lost

June 1, 2021 – Last Thursday, we learned with horror that remains of 215 Indigenous children had been found buried on the grounds of what used to be Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia.

HealthCareCAN recognizes that the pathway towards reconciliation is one that includes a tragic and sorrowful history. This unthinkable sorrow weighs heavily on our consciousness right now as we stand alongside the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation and all Indigenous communities in mourning the loss of those innocent lives.

As the national voice of hospitals and healthcare organizations, HealthCareCAN is firmly committed to advancing the health-related recommendations in the report from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada. Through thoughtful collaboration with Indigenous communities and leaders in health and policy, we are working toward building an equitable, high-quality and culturally safe health system that serves all Canadians.

As a nation we must never forget the injustices suffered by Indigenous peoples, past and present.

Respectfully,

Paul-Émile Cloutier
President and CEO
