The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)—the Government of Canada’s health research investment agency—supports the development of new scientific knowledge and enables its mobilization into improved health outcomes for Canadians. CIHR provides leadership and support to more than 13,000 health researchers and trainees across the country. For more information about CIHR, visit https://cihr-irsc.gc.ca/.
This is an important and auspicious time to be joining CIHR. Its 2021-2031 Strategic Plan establishes the context that will enable Canadian health research to be internationally recognized as inclusive, collaborative, transparent and culturally safe, and that has real world impact. Further, the Plan envisions a future where evidence is integrated in health decisions. This will be achieved by advancing the science and practice of knowledge mobilization, maximizing results for Canadians, and strengthening Canada’s health systems through innovation. It is within this context that the Canadian Institutes of Health Research is building a new leadership team for Learning Health Systems and inviting applicants for three new expertise-driven executive positions:
Executive Director, Clinical Trials (ED-CT)
Aligned with CIHR’s Strategic Plan, and in support of Canada’s Biomanufacturing and Life Sciences Strategy as outlined in Budget 2021, the ED-CT will ensure scientific excellence across clinical trials-related research initiatives and direct the work of a diverse complement of individuals to support CIHR’s clinical trials research-related objectives. Working closely with other GoC departments and agencies, as well as partners in many sectors, the ED-CT will bring deep expertise in the design, funding, and/or conduct of clinical trials in order to oversee the implementation of the CIHR Clinical Trials Fund. This fund aims to solidify a pan-Canadian foundation for clinical trials research that will enhance Canada’s capacity to fund, conduct and use clinical trials. To apply, click here.
Executive Director, Patient-Oriented Research (ED-POR)
As a recognized leader in Patient-Oriented Research, the ED-POR will bring scientific leadership, strategic vision and a track record of proven results in working with a broad range of stakeholders to the role, particularly patients, caregivers, and patient organizations. In addition to strategic oversight of Canada’s Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR), the ED-POR will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of patient engagement across CIHR, including working with Institutes and external stakeholders to support the development of new POR and Patient Engagement initiatives. The ED-CRPPHE will have scientific and management expertise and a strong understanding of infectious diseases, zoonotic diseases and/or health emergencies. The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Centre’s management, such as business planning, providing strategic advice and leadership, as well as conducting performance measurement and evaluation. The ED-CRPPHE will also ensure that the Centre’s programs and policies are aligned with CIHR’s mission, mandate, and strategic objectives. As with all Director-level roles in the Agency, these roles will also include business planning, providing strategic advice and leadership as a member of the Agency’s senior leadership team, as well as conducting performance measurement and evaluation. The ED will also ensure that the programs and policies under their remit are aligned with CIHR’s mission, mandate, and strategic objectives.
As a well-qualified candidate for any of these three roles, you are known for your leadership in health research and your broad vision. You have a record of inspiring teams and collaborating within a multi-stakeholder environment in achieving outcomes. You bring significant experience in developing, maintaining, and leveraging strategic partnerships, research funding/collaborations and relationships with partners including academia, government departments/agencies, health organizations, and the private sector. In addition to your business acumen and interpersonal/communication skills, your capacity to drive strategic growth will be highly valued. Ideally, you possess a graduate or professional degree in a health-related discipline and are proficient in both official languages.
