Your Opportunity:

Make a difference in the lives of Albertans by joining the Clinical Neurosciences team, at the Foothills Medical Centre, as a Nurse Practitioner (NP). The Neurosurgery NP is a self-directed Advanced Practice Nurse who is educated at the graduate level and functions in a collaborative practice model. Reporting to the Manager, PCU 112, 101 and the Calgary Spine Program, the NP will provide general neurosurgical medical care to adult inpatients at the FMC.

As one of Canada’s largest hospitals, FMC provides advanced healthcare services to more than two million people from Calgary, southern Alberta, southeastern British Columbia and southern Saskatchewan. The NP supports neurosurgery patients in the acute inpatient units at FMC.

The role provides care to patients with neurosurgical disorders through a collaborative multidisciplinary team including Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Health Care Aides, Clinical Nurse Educators, Nurse practitioners, Allied health professionals, physicians, and residents. All disciplines work together to provide holistic care to patient and their families.

Description:

As the NP, you will perform advanced, focused and/or comprehensive health assessments and interventions, as well as order, interpret and perform diagnostic tests to formulate differential diagnoses and management plans through the integration of patient information and evidence-based practice. This will be done in collaboration with the attending physician, residents, and medical students. The NP plays a key role in the coordination of efficient discharge planning/disposition planning and discharges documentation for both patients and physicians. Additional expectations and opportunities are participation in quality improvement initiatives as subject matter experts, identification of areas of research in the inpatient setting, participation in research projects, and promoting the application of research and evidence.

Required Qualifications:

Current NP license to practice in Alberta with CARNA-provincial equivalent will be taken for potential candidates. Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to work with an inter-professional team. Demonstrated critical thinking, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

One (1) year experience as an NP in a clinical setting. 5 years experience in Neurosciences as an RN. Experience using an order entry and/or electronic patient record system.
