POSITION: Respiratory Therapist, Respiratory Services – Casual
SUPERVISOR: P.P.L and Coordinator Respiratory Therapy Services
SALARY: from $37.48 to $45.56 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY

The role of the respiratory therapist in the Critical Care PSU involves responsibilities for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care for respiratory patients throughout the hospital.  On a rotational basis the respiratory therapist is a member of the multidisciplinary team within PICU, NICU, wards and emergency, the cardiac arrest team and the trauma team.

The successful candidate will:

  • Implement respiratory care including patient assessment, oxygen therapy, airway management, ventilatory management, diagnostic testing and patient transport
  • Utilize clinical practice guidelines, clinical pathways, medical directives, hospital policies and procedures to promote and implement evidence based practice
  • Ensure safe and effective application of precise technological equipment to meet determined patient care goals
  • Anticipate and prepare for emergencies
  • Provide patient and family support and education
  • Contribute to the orientation and education of various members of the interdisciplinary team as appropriate
  • Preceptor students from respiratory therapy educational programs
  • Participate in quality assurance, research activities and workload measurement as appropriate
  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional respiratory therapy practice

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Vulnerable Sector Check (Essential)
  • Member of the College of Respiratory Therapy (General Certificate) (Essential)
  • BCLS certification (Essential)
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and collaborative practice skills (Essential)
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing education, including independent learning (Essential)
  • Degree in Health Sciences or related field (Preferred)
  • Member in good standing of the RTSO (Preferred)
  • Member in good standing of the CRST (Preferred)
  • 2 years of pediatric critical care experience (Preferred)
  • Current PALS certification or successful completion of PALS certification within 12 months (Essential)
  • Bilingualism (English/French) (Preferred)

Effective March 29, 2021, CHEO will conduct a more comprehensive pre-screening and evaluation process.  This process may include more varied and multidimensional testing such as a written test, practical exam, or other assessment. All candidates who meet the essential and preferred qualifications may be tested.
