SFU Medical School and Fraser Health
Fraser Health (FH) is responsible for the delivery of hospital and community-based health services to over 1.9 million people in 20 diverse communities from Burnaby to Fraser Canyon on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territories of the Coast Salish and Nlaka’pamux Nations, and is home to six Métis Chartered Communities. On 28 November 2022, the British Columbia government announced that SFU will establish the first entirely new medical school in Western Canada in fifty-five years. SFU Medical School graduates will have the skills and expertise to provide inter-professional team-based health care where it is most needed in British Columbia, particularly for underserved and underrepresented populations, including Indigenous peoples.
SFU Medical School and FH share a common commitment to achieve high-quality health care focused on improving the health of the population they serve through education and training of a fit-for-purpose health workforce.
The British Columbia government requires the submission of a business case for Fraser Health’s role in the development of the SFU Medical School to be submitted no later than 31 May 2023. In this context the regional medical leader will have co-accountability with the executive director, Learning, Research and Innovation for designing the Fraser Health business case.
The appointee will be a physician with a strong track record in the Fraser Health region of clinical service, team-based care and collegial relationships with other health professionals, FH administration and local communities, as well as involvement in medical education and training. The Regional Medical Lead will be a passionate, relational-based provider and leader who works to sustain strong, collaborative working relationships between teams, communities and external partners. The role provides strategic medical leadership to collaboratively develop a vision, co-lead the strategy, and ensure the planning, coordination, integration, operation, and evaluation of Fraser Health’s partnership with Simon Fraser University in the development and implementation of the new and different medical school in the Fraser Health region.
The Regional Medical Lead will have dual reporting to the FH VP Medicine and the SFU Medical School Dean.
- Identify opportunities for collaboration between Fraser Health medical staff and SFU’s development of its new and different medical school.
- Prepare a faculty recruitment, development and retention plan, consistent with provincial remuneration frameworks and agreements that would be applicable in other BC Health Authorities.
- Champion opportunities related to the SFU Medical School within medical staff leadership, associations, and wider Fraser Health programs and teams.
- Identify clinical academic processes, space and systems that can be leveraged, as well as additional requirements to deliver SFU’s medical program.
- Advise SFU leaders, medical education experts and external partners as part of working groups on options for the curriculum, space, infrastructure, workforce, research opportunities and admissions pathways for the SFU Medical School.
Key Areas of Involvement:
- Setting the Medical Learner structure for Fraser Health:
- in collaboration with senior leadership at Fraser Health, Faculty of Medicine, University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty of Nursing (UBC), and SFU Medical School.
- in partnership with Fraser Health’s Director, Department of Evaluation and Research Services
- In partnership with Fraser Health’s Director, Learning Strategies and Innovation
- In partnership with the Associate Dean, Vancouver – Fraser, UBC Faculty of Medicine
- Implementing the integrated research vision by working with Fraser Health medical staff and government liaisons, research foundations and institutions, the community and private
- Supporting the Fraser Health Learning Strategy as it relates to enabling future focused medical education supports and pathways (clinical placements [equity between students, smoothing of practice areas for learning], faculty appointments, residency and fellowship pathways, expansion of integration of FH EMR technology into learning pathways).
- Working closely with SFUMS, the Regional Medical Lead will contribute to / engage subject matter experts within Fraser Health to develop the medical The vision for the school is to lead the way in medical education that models an understanding cultural safety and humility, including Indigeneity and decolonized, holistic health care. The partnership will build an approach to health professional education with a focus on primary care, inter-professional practice and the provision of safe, culturally competent care. Faculty, students, and programming will reflect the communities that are being served (e.g., diverse Indigenous peoples, refugee and newcomer communities etc.).
- Physician in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia
- CPSBC licensed or eligible to be registered
- Eligibility for membership on the Fraser Health Medical Staff.
- Five (5) years leadership experience within the healthcare
- A Master’s degree in health administration, business administration or equivalent experience is desirable.
- Additional leadership
- Experience with supporting medical learners (clinical teaching, faculty, coordination of placements)
This position will initially be a 0.4 FTE with the potential to be increased to 0.6 as the project progresses.
