Occupational Therapist and Program Leader – Occupational Therapy and Nutrition Department

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the Program Leader acts as a role model and coach to the occupational therapy and nutrition team through professional and clinical leadership, structured and supportive communication, and assistance with achieving Boomerang Health’s strategic goals. Furthermore, as an Occupational Therapist, this role is required to maintain an active caseload of patients. As a member of Boomerang Health’s leadership team, the Program Leader works collaboratively with the Managing Director to provide direction in the standards of clinical practice and acts as a leader in supporting the implementation of continuous process improvements. In addition, the Program Leader collaborates with the leadership team to: execute and maintain short and long-term plans that align with the clinic’s goals and strategies; and ensure a consistent model of care and approaches to practice and processes in the clinic.
Key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
Leadership
- Works alongside the Executive Director on issues of high-level planning around processes, resources, and education and training
- Collaborates with the leadership team in the implementation of initiatives/processes addressing patients’ needs to ensure high quality of service and improve the clinic’s performance
- Leads the recruitment, assignment of duties, professional development, and performance management of the occupational therapy and nutrition team
- Supervises and acts as a resource for consultation/advice for professional staff
- Actively manages client and clinician scheduling
- Leads the development and documentation of clinical procedures and the maintenance of up-to-date protocols and quality assurance practices
- Consults with the Executive Director to discuss and explore new initiatives, programs, and improvements
- Supports the Executive Director in relationship building with community partners when necessary
- Develops and manages strong relationships across the paediatric network with a focus on healthcare providers
- Actively seeks opportunities to be involved in family education initiatives
- Other duties as required
Clinical Practice
- Maintains a practice based on a mix of in-person at the clinic and some virtual care
- Provides comprehensive occupational therapy assessments and intervention to children with a variety of occupational performance issues
- Follows evidence-based approaches to assessment and treatment
- Provides education and feedback to families
- Communicates effectively and maintains relationships with referring physicians, healthcare providers and other relevant community stakeholders
- Manages a varied caseload and meets required timelines
- Maintains complete and accurate medical records using an electronic (computerized) system
Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy, with experience in paediatric assessment and treatment
- Registered with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO)
- Leadership certification is an asset
Experience/Skills
- A minimum of three to five years of clinical experience
- A minimum of two to three years of leadership/managing others experience
- Strong proficiency in assessment and evidence-based occupational therapy interventions with children. Experience treating the following areas is an asset: feeding, fine motor, sensory processing, self-regulation, motor planning
- Ability to work collaboratively in an interprofessional model
- Ability to work with quality improvement methods, including data collection and evaluation
- A self-starter with proven problem-solving and critical thinking abilities, managing effectively in a dynamic, changing environment
- Ability to mentor, coach and facilitate positive change and innovation
- Organized and able to manage competing priorities and balance multiple, disparate tasks
- Sets high professional standards, and a commitment to continuous education, professional development and learning with an interdisciplinary health team
- Knowledge and proficiency in current, evidenced-based methods and practices in health care delivery
- Strong leadership, organization, evaluation, time management and interpersonal skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proficiency in the use of the computer hardware and software, particularly in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
