About the Opportunity
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides comprehensive clinical care to patients in the Emergency Department (ED). The NP works autonomously to diagnose, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe pharmaceuticals and perform procedures within the legislated scope of practice and where required, a defined collaborative practice agreement, to provide care to a defined population. The NP provides direct care and partners with other members of the health care team for the achievement of immediate care to patients. Working in collaboration with a physician, the NP assess the physical needs of highly acute complex patients admitted to the ED. The NP orders, interprets, and records results of clinical tests and reports results to physicians.
The NP integrates selected tasks and knowledge from the NSHA Emergency Program of Care into a framework of advanced nursing practice. The NP works in close collaboration with Emergency Department Physician, nursing and interdisciplinary team.
Nurse Practitioners are accountable to, and ensure their practice is consistent with, both the Nova Scotia College of Nursing Standards of Practice for Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners, as well as the Canadian Nurses Association’s Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses. Nurse Practitioners are accountable to provide safe, competent, compassionate, and ethical care within their legislated scope of practice, educational preparation, and individual competence, and to engage in professional development and educational activities to develop and maintain competence meeting role requirements and care needs. NPs are responsible and accountable for their own practice consistent with relevant legislation, professional, and ethical standards.
The NP ensures that the principles and practices that guide Nova Scotia Health (NSH) such as the overall organizational and Emergency Program of Care’s vision, mission, values, expected behaviors, the leadership philosophy, organizational health, population health, ethics, safety, quality, partnerships and interdisciplinary collaboration are integrated within the support that is provided by the work that they do and through the messages they deliver.
