July 17, 2015 (Ottawa, ON) – HealthCareCAN applauds the major recommendations found in the final report of the Advisory Panel on Healthcare Innovation titled, “Unleashing Innovation: Excellent Healthcare for Canada”. The creation of a healthcare innovation agency and a one billion dollars healthcare innovation fund as well as the implementation of a national strategy to promote patient and family-centred care are a few of the bold, forward-looking recommendations found in today’s report.
“We are pleased with Panel on Healthcare Innovation’s suggested new directions. We encourage all levels of government, all parties and all healthcare stakeholders to embrace the need to spur innovation and act on these recommendations. Our members are willing to do their part to build on our strong health research and innovation tradition and further leverage them through coordinated action and strategic investments,” said Bill Tholl, President and CEO of HealthCareCAN.
The Panel’s recommendations set a new path in directing the focus towards a more integrated system to address the needs of more vulnerable populations and the social determinants of health. It also calls for a stronger leadership role to be played by the federal government in consensus building as well as investment in stronger health technologies.
“Innovation is at the heart of any meaningful move toward a more efficient and patient-centred health care system. Our system has marked time for too long. Innovative approaches are imperative in addressing the most pressing issues facing the healthcare system such as infrastructure, the frail and elderly patient population and information technologies,” concluded Mr. Tholl.
HealthCareCAN will take a closer look at the report and develop an action plan to support the Panel’s hope for a better future for the health of Canadians.
