As the national association representing healthcare and health research organizations from across Canada, HealthCareCAN’s vision is for healthy Canadians supported by a world-leading health system. HealthCareCAN denounces anti-black racism, anti-Indigenous racism, racism experienced by other persons-of-colour and all racially motivated violence. Racism undercuts our nation’s ability to ensure good health.
HealthCareCAN will continue to work to eradicate racism in Canada’s healthcare system. Similarly, we remain dedicated to the cause and spirit of reconciliation in Canada generally and in the health care system specifically. Our Bringing Reconciliation to Healthcare in Canada: Wise Practices for Healthcare Leaders report, which discusses the role that Canadian health leaders play in helping to close the health gap was the first step of many we plan to take to address this issue.
HealthCareCAN champions the critical importance of inclusion, diversity, and creating culturally and psychologically safe workspaces that serve all Canadians with humility, empathy, and compassion. It is core to the education we provide to every future and current leader and it is foundational to our People-Centred Care Leadership Program. We also reiterate our support for the Canadian Coalition for Public Health in the 21st Century’s Statement on Racism and Health, which states clearly and correctly that: “It’s time for Canada to do better.”
The frontline health organizations and health researchers that comprise the HealthCareCAN membership give HealthCareCAN the critical perspective needed to seize collaborative and innovative opportunities to drive change. HealthCareCAN is committed to doing better and to using our voice to fight racism and to work on ways to eliminate social disparity and marginalization that so severely undermines health.
Sincerely,
