June 21, Ottawa – Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, HealthCareCAN and I salute First Nations, Métis, and Inuit cultures on this day of celebration and join in marking the summer solstice, the year’s longest day of sunlight.
While there is much to celebrate in the rich Indigenous Peoples’ heritage, culture values, we also recognize that much still needs to be done to ensure that Indigenous Peoples’ experience in navigating and working within Canada’s healthcare system is equitable, accessible and safe.
For HealthCareCAN, this means continuing to strive to be a true, supportive ally through a strong commitment to continue learning of ways to better support Indigenous Peoples and to be conscientious and inclusive in the work we do.
We are also proud of our many members across the country who have made it a priority to look inward, in consultation with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit patients and healthcare workers. These ongoing efforts are critical to best incorporate cultural practices into the delivery of care and provide a safe and inclusive environment for their Indigenous patients and staff.
