Recreation Therapist I (#REC00001082)

Location: Edmonton, Alberta
Requisition #: REC00001082
Salary Range: $39.62 – $52.76 per hour
Job Type: Regular Full Time

Your Opportunity:

The Turningpoint Program (Unit 3-6) at Alberta Hospital Edmonton is an 18-bed inpatient forensic unit supporting youth and young adults involved with the justice system or experiencing acute psychiatric disruption. As a Recreation Therapist, you’ll play a key role in helping adolescents build skills, stability, and confidence through evidence based therapeutic recreation.

Working within a positive, collaborative interdisciplinary team, you will complete comprehensive assessments, develop and implement individualized and group-based interventions, and evaluate treatment progress using clinical standards and best practice frameworks.

This role is well suited to a therapist with strong clinical reasoning, solid knowledge of common youth mental health diagnoses, and the ability to engage, de-escalate, and maintain healthy boundaries in a dynamic environment. You bring creativity in leisure planning, excellent communication skills, and demonstrated competency in delivering structured therapeutic recreation programming for adolescents.

This is a meaningful opportunity to support youth in making positive change while contributing your expertise to a supportive, team centered program. If this work resonates with you, we’d be happy to consider your application.

Description:

As a Recreation Therapist I, you will be working collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, providing comprehensive services for patients (clients, residents) within your assigned program or service area. You will ensure the level of therapeutic recreation practice is evidence based, patient-and family-centred, and in accordance with policies, procedures and standards of practice.

You will complete assessment, treatment, education and management of clients’ treatment progress and provide clinical support and consultation. You will collaborate and communicate with the health care team and participate in patient rounds, family conferences and meetings as related to the client and family.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of bachelor’s degree in Recreation Therapy, Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation and Leisure Studies. Active or eligible registration with Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Candidates must have a minimum of 2 years’ experience providing recreational therapy in a group setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates who have experience working with adolescents and/or experience in forensic, addiction and/or mental health settings.
