About the Team
The https://www.ualberta.ca/en/rehabilitation/index.html is Canada’s only free-standing faculty dedicated to rehabilitation. It offers accredited professional programs in Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech-Language Pathology, along with a substantial research and continuing education portfolio. With campuses in Edmonton, Calgary, and Camrose, the faculty serves approximately 1,000 graduate students and is a national leader in advancing rehabilitation practice and outcomes.
Description
This position has an initial appointment from September 2026 to June 2027.
Location – This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.
The Corbett Hall Early Education Program (CHEEP) is operated out of the Department of Communication Sciences. CHEEP provides specialized preschool programing to children, aged two and a half to five years, diagnosed with developmental delays/disorders.
The Funding to operate CHEEP is provided through specialized funding (Program Unit Funds, etc.) from Alberta Education. Programing is designed and implemented by a team of education/intervention specialists to support children in expanding and developing their skills and abilities across developmental areas, with a strong focus on communication. CHEEP serves as a clinical placement and laboratory learning environment for MSLP students.
The Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) is responsible for assessing clients, developing communication objectives, implementing treatment plans and reviewing client progress. The position serves preschool aged children and their families on site. The SLP provides support and models to the classroom team to facilitate role release for communication objectives, as well as supports development of the clients across other developmental domains (motor, social-emotional, cognitive, self-help, sensory processing). The SLP directly supervises MSLP students in the classroom.
Responsibilities
Assessment
- Administers initial communication assessment to potential clients
- With consent, completes preliminary review of client files and corresponds with referring clinician and/or other professionals as appropriate
- Completes analysis of assessment results and writes assessment reports
- Informally screens program children to identify a need for assessment across areas of development
- Re-assesses clients using objective and non-standardized measures near the end of the school year
- Works with the classroom team to refer children to outside agencies for further assessment or intervention
- Conducts regular, ongoing informal assessment and evaluation to monitor children’s progress as well as program effectiveness
Individual Program Plans
- Collaborates with team members, including parents/guardians in establishing achievable, measurable and functional long term and short term goals (October) on the IPP
- Collaborates with team members in determining and implementing effective teaching/intervention
- Provides written updates (February and June) on the IPP
- Modifies, adapts and/or adds goals as necessary to the IPP
- Works collaboratively with the team to write a comprehensive year end summary (May)
- Communicates clearly written recommendations regarding level of services required when a child leaves the program and makes referrals when appropriate
- Communicates with families as needed throughout the year and participate in transition meetings in June to discuss children’s progress and growth as well as ongoing areas of need
- Supports parents/guardians in making decisions regarding future programming for their child
Treatment
- Determines appropriate communication objectives for each child and communicates expectations and strategies to other team members
- Works with other team members to design/develop and implement functional and engaging individual, small group and full class activities
- Provides direct/indirect intervention for communication delays to clients
- Supports intervention for other goal areas for clients including self care skills (dressing, toileting, feeding, washing), social-emotional skills (regulation, behavior management), motor skills and sensory processing; this may include lifting, carrying and physically supporting clients during classroom activities
- Maintains first aid certification (recertification every 3 years)
- Provide suggestions for home practice and carry-over activities to promote generalization of skills to clients, family members, teachers and support personnel as needed
- Monitors and documents children’s progress in the areas of speech and language through a variety of means
- Applies current research/knowledge to the therapy process
- Creates a language rich classroom environment while modeling and providing information and strategies to other team members on supporting a language rich environment
- Attends meetings/case conferences with other organizations as required
Participate in the education and supervision of students
- Participates in supervising students completing clinical placements at CHEEP, including training, ongoing feedback, midterm and final evaluations and collaborates with student placement coordinators to address any potential concerns
- When appropriate, offers observation opportunities or consultation to students in speech pathology or pre-kindergarten programs
Qualifications
- Graduate degree (Master’s) in speech-language pathology
- Alberta College of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (ACSLPA) registration
- Minimum 2 years pediatric experience; more preferred
- Specialized training in motor speech disorders and other complex communication disorders is an asset
- Previous experience working in a school setting is considered an asset
- Experience supervising graduate students is considered an asset
- Exceptional team skills, conflict management and collaboration skills
- High level of expertise in their profession
- Excellent ability to facilitate clinical learning experiences
- Proven ability to be professional and tactful in highly sensitive situations often involving highly confidential information
- Demonstrates excellent judgement and high level of initiative
- Proven superior organizational, self-management and time management, analytic and solution seeking skills with excellent attention to details
- Excellent written communication skills with a focus on IPP and report writing
- Proven / demonstrated understanding of program planning, implementation, data collection, evaluation, assessment and reporting
- Develops and/or maintains professional, positive, and collaborative working relationships with both internal / external clients and stakeholders at all organizational level
- Excellent communication skills to facilitate relationship management with various stakeholders/partners (including Uof A and Alberta Ed partners, parents, families, community partners)
- Proven computer proficiently with the following computer systems/platforms: Microsoft Office, Google Applications, BoardMaker
