June 21, 2025 (Ottawa, ON) – Today, on National Indigenous Peoples Day, we celebrate the cultures, histories and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples across the country. It’s also a time to reflect on the lasting impacts of colonialism and systemic racism, and the urgent need to address the health inequities Indigenous communities continue to face.
As an organization committed to building a stronger, fairer and more sustainable health system, we know that meaningful reconciliation starts with action. That means supporting Indigenous-led research, listening to Indigenous voices and working together to shape health policies that respect Indigenous knowledge and rights. A recent example of this is from HealthCareCAN member Unity Health Toronto, who, in close collaboration with Anishnawbe Health Toronto (AHT), have opened The Indigenous Health Centre, a new health care facility that brings together traditional Indigenous healing and Western medicine under one roof.
It also means holding ourselves — and our governments — accountable to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, we will continue to support our members and our governments in working toward implementing the health-related calls to action.
We stand with Indigenous leaders, researchers, caregivers and communities who are working every day to improve the health system. Their knowledge and leadership are key to building a future where everyone in Canada can get the care they need, when and where they need it.
On this day and every day, we’re committed to walking the path of reconciliation — with open hearts, open minds and a shared goal of a healthier, more equitable future for all.
