POSITION SUMMARY
Infection Prevention teams is part of the Safety, Family & Partnership program. This position will report to the Manager of IPAC Under the direction of the Program leadership, you will act as the lead construction resource person for the IPAC team, which includes but not limited to the following: architectural drawing review (blue prints); hoarding plan review; hoarding inspections; Permit approvals; attendance at construction meetings; performing surveillance activities as they pertain to construction related infections; acting as a resource for internal and external clients.
Additionally you will share responsibility with other staff members for the routine clinical activities of the Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) program, including but not limited to the following: surveillance and reporting of healthcare associated infections; provision of IPAC consultation / advice regarding infection control issues; outbreak management and investigation; policy development and implementation; committee activities; education of staff, medical staff, and students.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The successful candidate will be involved in ensuring the continued performance of the following key program activities:
- Provision of IPAC consultation/advice regarding construction /renovation/maintenance projects at CHEO
- Collaborate with key stakeholders internally and externally on construction/ renovation/maintenance projects. This may also include membership / participation on various CHEO committees, involvement in planned construction and renovation activities, etc.
- Ensure that CHEO meets the needs of any evolving infection and prevention practice as it relates to health care facility renovation, construction and maintenance.
- Perform and/or review Infection control Risk Assessments (ICRA) and preventative measures analysis
- Review architectural drawings, specifications, schematic and detailed design from the IPAC perspective
- Review Infection Control (IC) Plans submitted by contractors and providing feedback as needed
- Perform hoarding inspections prior to, during and before completion of construction projects
- Participate with Quality Improvement, professional development and education activities/programs to ensure excellence in the provision of Infection Prevention and Control services at multiple CHEO sites;
- Perform cross-functional and/or other duties consistent with the job classification, as required
- Involvement in local (regional), provincial and national infection control initiatives as requested by external organizations.
- Participate with active surveillance for, and timely reporting of, reportable communicable diseases externally to the Medical Officer of Health, Ottawa Public Health and internally, to Occupational Health and Safety.
- Investigation, management, and reporting of sentinel infection control events (e.g. infectious disease outbreaks). This includes the development of formal reports, and provision of written recommendations to prevent recurrences.
- Participation in quality improvement initiatives related to infection control (Solutions for Patient Safety teams, IPAC-led initiatives, etc.)
- Act as a resource for staff and medical staff at CHEO, and occasionally outside of CHEO, on pediatric infection control issues. This also includes membership / participation on various CHEO committees, involvement in planned construction and renovation activities, etc.
- Education of staff, medical staff, students, and agency staff regarding current infection prevention and control standards / requirements (such as routine practices – hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment and additional precautions, etc.).
- Supporting inpatient teams with day to day patient isolation management.
- Involvement in local (regional), provincial and national infection control initiatives as requested by external organizations.
- Participation in infection control research, and professional development activities
- Flexibility in scheduling with ability to work days, evenings, and/or weekends and potential for on-call shifts
QUALIFICATIONS
- Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (Essential)
- Bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences (BScN or other) (Preferred)
- Current certification in Infection Control (CIC) (Essential)
- IPAC-Canada/APIC endorsed infection control course completed or in progress (Essential)
- Pediatric experience in a clinical care environment (min. 5 years) (Essential)
- Infection prevention and control experience in a pediatric acute care facility (Preferred)
- Computer skills including software such as Power Point, Word, Excel, Outlook (Essential)
- Independent learning and problem solving skills (Essential)
- Leadership skills, including confidence to make critical decisions with limited information (Essential)
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written (Essential)
- Ability to deal effectively and negotiate with a variety of disciplines internally and externally (Essential)
- Knowledge in current Canadian Standards Association (CSA) standards as they relate to IPAC (Essential)
- Experience reviewing Infection Control (IC) Plans submitted by contractors and providing feedback as needed (Essential)
- Experience performing hoarding inspections prior to, during and before completion of construction projects (Essential)
- Experience with review of architectural drawings, specifications, schematic and detailed design from the IPAC perspective (Essential)
- Experience with performing Infection control Risk Assessments (ICRA) and preventative measures analysis (Essential)
- Knowledge of infectious diseases processes and the regulatory and legislative requirements that are relevant for infection control practice (Essential)
- Ability to develop and deliver educational programs/ materials geared to all categories of health care workers (Essential)
- Vulnerable Sector Check (Essential)
- Bilingualism (English and French) (Preferred)
